The Franklin Turnpike Spine: How An Allendale Summer Day Actually Runs

If you have lived in Allendale for more than a season, you already know the two names outsiders learn first: Crestwood Lake and the Celery Farm. What you may not have thought about is that they sit on the same road, roughly two miles apart, with the borough's small restaurant row tucked between them off West Allendale Avenue. The lake, the preserve, and dinner are not three separate errands. They are one corridor, and the residents who plan a Saturday around that fact tend to end up with the easiest afternoons.

That is the argument for this post. Not that Allendale has good summer options. You know that. The claim is that treating Franklin Turnpike as a spine, not as a set of scattered pins, changes how a July day actually unfolds here. The rest of this is the evidence.

The morning belongs to the Celery Farm

The Celery Farm sits on Franklin Turnpike between Pittis Avenue and Alison Court, and the parking lot is genuinely small. That is the first useful thing to know about it. On a warm July Saturday the lot fills before nine, and there is no overflow. If you are going, go early or plan a weekday.

Once you are in, the numbers do a lot of the work. Over 248 species of birds have been recorded here, and more than 50 are known to breed here, and the wetlands and deciduous woods provide habitat for mammals, fish, reptiles and insects. The full loop is short, roughly 1.2 miles, and the elevation gain is negligible, which means it is a walk you can do in flip-flops on the way to somewhere else, not a hike that eats the morning. The Celery Farm has three viewing platforms built by Fyke Nature Association members and six named bridges and numerous other small bridges, and there are 17 benches spaced along the trail.

Two rules worth internalizing, because both catch first-time visitors:

• No dogs. This is enforced, and it is not a gray area.
• No restrooms. Plan accordingly, especially with kids.

The preserve is managed by volunteers from the Fyke Nature Association and the Allendale Marsh Wardens, and the bird checklist and self-guided exploration guides are worth pulling up before you go if you want the walk to be more than a lap. Even at a slow pace you are back at your car in under an hour, which is exactly the point of putting this first in the day.

Crestwood Lake, and the calendar residents plan around

Crestwood is where Allendale's summer social life actually happens, and the 2026 calendar has a few dates worth knowing cold.

Crestwood Park is a 71 acre municipal facility located on West Crescent Avenue in Allendale, the park includes a lake with 3 beaches, multiple sports fields, and a barn pavilion (The Red Barn), and Crestwood Lake is a private lake where membership is required. The membership piece is where I see the most confusion from newer residents and from friends in surrounding towns who want to visit.

Here is how the sponsor structure actually works. Residents of Upper Saddle River, Saddle River, and Ho-Ho-Kus are able to register as a non-resident at the corresponding rates without a sponsor, residents of any other municipalities must have a registered Allendale member as a sponsor, and the sponsor is responsible for the non-resident family's behavior at the lake. So if your cousin lives in Mahwah or Wyckoff and wants to bring the kids to the beach, they need you on the paperwork, and you are on the hook for how the afternoon goes. If they live in one of the three named neighbor towns, they just register.

One quiet detail: teachers from Allendale's three schools and veterans receive a 25% discount. That is not new, but it is not well-publicized either, and it applies at the point of registration, not as a rebate.

If you are a swim family, the Crestwood Cruisers season is set. The participant's age is determined by his/her age on May 31st, and the season runs from end of June through the end of July. Register at the same time as your Crestwood membership rather than treating it as a separate step. Once the season starts on June 25, the lake operates seven days a week, 11 to 7, through the summer. That is the schedule to anchor your weekends against.

Dinner is a two-block decision

The stretch of West Allendale Avenue between Park Avenue and Franklin Turnpike, plus the first block of Franklin Turnpike itself, is where most of the borough's independent restaurants sit. This is the part of the corridor you can walk after leaving the lake or the preserve, and it is genuinely dense for a town Allendale's size.

The room you probably already know is the AB&G. Chris Kunisch runs it out of 67 West Allendale Avenue, and it is known to its fans as the AB&G, a neighborhood institution established in 1935 with hamburgers, prime rib, chicken, and fresh seafood. Ninety years in the same building is not a marketing line, it is a fact of the streetscape. If you have not been in a while, the banquet room is newly renovated.

The Italian bench is deep and worth breaking apart, because the three main rooms are not interchangeable:

• Fino Ristorante, 114 West Allendale Avenue, is BYOB and leans into a longer dinner. Owner Dion Peja.
• Mezza Luna Bistro, 96 West Allendale Avenue, is the other classic Italian anchor on the same block, owned by Ed Veseli.
• Savini, 168 West Crescent Avenue, is a short drive from the West Allendale spine and does lunch service Monday through Friday, which the two above generally do not.

For a newer entry, Allendale Social operates at 9 Franklin Turnpike, which was formerly the home of Restaurant L, and it is from the same team behind Uno Mas. The kitchen runs a New American menu that changes seasonally, which makes it the room I send people to when they are tired of the standing rotation.

If you are feeding kids after a beach day and do not want a sit-down, Village Pizza at 35 West Allendale Avenue is family-owned and has been operating since 1997, offering dine-in, take out, delivery, catering, and wood-fire pizza. It is the fastest turnaround on the strip and the one most compatible with a wet swim bag in the back seat.

The Saturday stop most residents forget

Between the lake and the preserve, on the same Franklin Turnpike spine, sits Rohsler's Allendale Nursery at 100 Franklin Turnpike. In the summer, the outdoor market runs alongside the plant business, with baked goods, preserves, and locally grown produce including peaches, corn, tomatoes, and summer squash. It is the closest thing Allendale has to a walk-up farm market during the growing months, and it is easy to loop in on the way back from either the Celery Farm or the lake without adding a real detour. If you are hosting anyone over July 4 weekend and want to skip the ShopRite line, this is the answer.

One date to circle

July 4, 2026, fireworks at Crestwood Lake, 7:30 p.m. If you are a Crestwood member, arrive earlier than you think you should. If you are not, this is one of the few nights the surrounding streets do the parking work for you, and the sightlines from the fields on the West Crescent Avenue side of the park hold up.

Everything else on your summer calendar in this town gets easier once you accept that the Franklin Turnpike corridor is doing most of the work. Park once, walk the preserve, drift south to Rohsler's for the peaches, cross to the lake, and end the night on West Allendale Avenue. That is the day. The map is not complicated. It is just not the one most people draw.
